Support the Symphony

The Southwest Michigan Orchestra is a vital community resource. We know from Cornerstone and other surveys that one of the reasons new-comers relocate to the St. Joseph-Benton Harbor area is the quality of life the area affords, including access to various arts and cultural activities, including the Symphony.

Ticket sales account for only about a third of any symphony orchestra's income. For the rest, we count on individual contributions, corporate sponsorships, foundation grants, fund-raising activities (like our Holiday Home Tour), and Symphony League support.

Contributions support not only our public concerts but also our educational programs. For example, the Orchestra presents in-school concerts every year for more than 3,000 grade-school children. To continue and expand these efforts - as well as to offer exciting seasons like this one - we rely on your support. Please add a contribution on the "Annual Fund" line of the order form when you purchase your tickets. Donations are tax-deductible and are recognized in the program book.

The IRA Charitable Rollover

Congress has extended the IRA Charitable Rollover provision until December 31, 2011.

A direct transfer from your IRA to The Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra can be a great way to make a tax-wise gift. Please consult with your financial advisor to determine your best gift option.

A qualified transfer will count toward your required minimum distribution and be excluded from your
gross income.  If you make your qualifying gift before January 31, 2011, you can apply it to either your
2010 or 2011 required minimum distribution.

To qualify for these benefits:

  • You must be 70½ years old or older at the time of the gift.
  • Your gift must be made directly from your IRA to The Southwest Michigan Sympony Orchestra.
  • You may transfer up to a total of $100,000.
  • The gift must be outright and cannot be used to create a gift annuity or charitable trust.
